Alrighty, here's the deal. I'm behind the times. I rarely use Office and literally still have my Office '97 that is still kicking after all of these years. I use Word to type out a few letters here and there, and also for Resumes. That's about it. I don't want or need the latest or greatest version for such a small amount of use. I'd like to get more familiar with Office in general.

I see various version of Office 2007 and later that are for sale on places like Ebay, listed in 'like new' and sometimes 'used' condition and claiming to have the code with them. According to the feedback (very high with few to no complaints), the discs are working and the code and everything works from what the feedback comments say. Right now there's an Office 2007 version going for about $15 in 'like new condition' that has what looks like the original Microsoft case, disc and code for 5 computers. First of all, is this legal to buy like this?
It is my understanding that sometime after 1997, Microsoft incorporated some type of system that checks the server and verifies the key code for the disc to make sure that more than one person/computer isn't using it. My question is basically whether these discs with the code will actually work if purchased used or 'like new/new' from someone else or used if someone has previously used them. How does that process work, exactly? Is it legal to buy a used disc so long as the new owner is still the only one using it? I can't figure out how that would work since the code is attached to the old owner's IP/computer.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, if that matters at all. I don't know a lot about the newer versions.
You can use the second hand computer you bought wherever you want to.
But you can't transfer an OEM license to any other machine.
When the OEM preinstalled licensed machine dies, the OEM license dies with it.

It is up to the firm as to whether they want your computer as a workstation if it meets the specifications of what they want in their business and if they will allow it to be part of their Network.
A word of advice: With a second hand computer reinstall the operating system as you never know what it has been used for and it may be infected with Malware..

To reinstall:
HP – Press F11 repeatedly
Or you can use this for preinstalled OEM or Retail Licenses

Using the downloaded ISO file Method may require phone Activation.
If it does require phone Activation, do not follow the Auto Prompts, but hold on for a real person to explain to as to what has been done for re-installation purposes

The above method also will require you to go to your Computer Manufacturer's website > Support and Downloads Section > locate your Model Number and Operating System > then download and install the latest Drivers for it.

Or you can also borrow the exact same Retail Windows 7 Edition DVD and use your Product Key to reinstall.
The COA sticker, which has the Product Key on it, is either on the underside of the Laptop or in the Battery Compartment.
With a Desktop it is either on the side, rear or top of the Computer Case.
Cheers.
